This is Hugo Medley. He was born yesterday, just days after his mother, Katie, escaped the shooting at the Dark Knight Rises premiere. His father, Caleb, was horribly injured, and remains in a medically induced coma.
Please visit this website to donate money to help pay for Caleb’s medical bills, which, for an uninsured nerd like so many of us, are going to be unimaginably high.
You guys know I’m a dad because I, by the immense and unearned good fortune of my life, was blessed with a beautiful, perfect son, and I often post pictures of him online so you can share even a sliver of the joy I feel in being his dad. I’m crying as I type this. Caleb Medley deserves this joy as much as I do. Hugo Medley deserves to be saddled with his funny, nerdy dad just as much as “Field” deserves me. Please help this family.
I walked out of a screening of The Dark Knight Rises early Friday morning, my mind full of thoughts about the film, only to find my Twitter feed filling with links alerting everyone to the horrific shooting that had taken place just hours before. I can’t help but think about all the people I sat in line with, or talked to before the movie started. Fellow fans. Instant kinship over a story we all grew up with. How many of you were at similar screenings that night? 12 people didn’t survive going to see the Batman movie. Many times that number left injured, taken in ambulances to hospitals in the middle of the night. The shooter (who’s out of luck if he thinks I’ll help spread his name or fuel his infamy) was caught, and will be punished, though not in any way that can be called comparable to the crimes he committed.
All of that happened before we heard about it. Yesterday something new happened. Hugo Medley was born. And his family needs our help. One day, someone’s going to tell him about what happened, and about how many people cared enough to help. Be part of that story.
Bit of a late reblog, but signal boosting nonetheless.
